Ayr Utd's Connor Elliot, 18, has been honoured with the Teenager of Courage award at the Daily Record Pride of Scotland Awards. Connor was diagnosed with chondrosarcoma in November 2022, a condition so rare that his consultant had treated only one other child in Scotland. The schoolboy had to make an agonising choice between an operation that would save his leg, but prevent him from playing football, or amputation. He made the call to amputate in order to preserve his sporting dreams. Connor underwent the traumatic operation at Glasgow's Royal Hospital for Children a day after his 15th birthday and received a prosthetic limb three days before Christmas. Now, Connor has been honoured with the Teenager of Courage award for his bravery and achievements in amputee football. Connor started training with the Amputee Football Association Scotland in January 2023 and was signed to Cork City, helping them win the Irish League before competing in the Champions League in Italy. Last season, he played for Portsmouth FC, winning the England Amputee FA IKO Premier League with his team. Connor has also won caps for Scotland, scoring a goal in his debut against Belgium. Ashley Reid, who founded the Amputee Football Association Scotland, says Connor is a breath of fresh air and has reminded all the older players exactly why they play the game. Connor's mum, Pauline, said the surgery was obviously a really tough time but his surgeon, Dr Rod Duncan, was amazing and the option of taking up amputee football was mentioned. Connor was determined to keep playing football in some form if he could - he was captain of his team and just lived for the game. The winners of the Pride of Scotland Awards will be honoured at a star-studded awards dinner at the Glasgow Hilton on Monday, June 8, hosted by Elaine C Smith and Sanjeev Kohli. Connor's story is an inspiration to many, and his achievements in amputee football are a testament to his courage and determination. And as he continues to play for Scotland, he is proving that anything is possible with hard work and dedication. But Connor's journey has not been easy, and he has faced many challenges along the way. So what's next for this talented young player? Only time will tell, but one thing is for sure - Connor Elliot is a name to watch in the world of amputee football.
