Ayr United were involved in a nine-goal thriller, losing 5-4 to Partick Thistle in the Scottish Championship on Saturday 5th September. The Honest Men staged a valiant fightback but ultimately fell short against the second-placed side at Firhill.

Gary Naysmith's side, who finished 7th in the Scottish Championship last season with 39 points from 36 games, showed attacking intent but defensive frailties proved costly. The BBC Sport live text reported a match of relentless action where Ayr fought back from a significant deficit. Their final 2025 table position saw them 38 points behind champions St Johnstone.

Partick Thistle, managed by Mark Wilson, dominated possession with 65% and used a 4-3-3 formation to apply early pressure. Ayr United, set up in a 4-2-3-1 by Gary Naysmith, found themselves on the back foot. The home side's attacking trio of Seb Drozd, T. Watt, and A. Fitzpatrick caused constant problems. Drozd was involved in the thick of the action, committing a foul that was noted in the live commentary.

Ayr's discipline wavered under pressure. Captain D. O'Reilly received a yellow card in the 73rd minute, while C. Loughrey was booked earlier in the 26th minute. Defenders K. Holt and D. Watret also saw yellow, with Holt cautioned at 74 minutes and Watret at 44 minutes. L. McBeth was the first name in the book, receiving a yellow after just 10 minutes. These interruptions disrupted any rhythm Ayr tried to build.

Facing a mounting scoreline, Naysmith turned to his bench in the second half to spark a revival. He made a double substitution at the 68-minute mark, bringing on B. Dempsey for B. Stanway and introducing T. Letsosa for R. Crawford. Shortly after, at 73 minutes, T. Watt made way for A. Samuel.

Further changes followed as Ayr chased the game. S. McMann was replaced by L. Dick at 75 minutes, and L. McBeth came off for J. Murphy at the same time. O. Whyte and O. Stirton were both withdrawn at the 65th minute, with T. Hatton and J. Landers entering the fray. The final roll of the dice saw A. Fitzpatrick replaced by C. Logan in the 90th minute.

The defeat leaves Ayr United with work to do early in the campaign. They currently sit 7th with 5 points from their opening matches. Last season's statistics show they scored 38 goals but conceded 47, resulting in a -9 goal difference. Replicating that defensive record will be a concern for Naysmith after shipping five goals in a single match.

The team's recent form, culminating in last season's run of LLLWL, is something they will be desperate to improve upon. The attacking spirit shown in scoring four goals away from home is a positive to build on. Fans can track the team's progress in the standings as the season develops.

Attention now turns to the next fixture, an away trip to face Queen's Park on 2nd January 2027. Queen's Park currently occupy 6th place, making it another important Championship clash. Preparing for that match and tightening up at the back will be the immediate focus at the Somerset Park training ground. The full schedule of upcoming games is available on our fixtures page.

Goalkeeper H. Stone will be looking for a more solid performance in front of him after a busy afternoon. The team travels to face Queen's Park on the 2nd of January next year.
